How to Measure Your Cat for a Bed

The nap atlas / Size & space

A good size comparison starts with the cat you see every day, rather than a weight label alone. A compact curl and a long side-sleeping stretch take up different amounts of room.

1. Watch an ordinary nap.

Notice the position your cat chooses most often. Do they tuck their paws beneath them, curl with their tail around their body, or stretch their legs out to one side? Measure the position you want the bed to accommodate. If their habits vary, plan for the larger resting pose.

2. Measure length and width.

Use a flexible tape beside your relaxed cat without disturbing them. Note the longest occupied length and the widest part of the pose. If that is impractical, mark the space they occupied on a blanket after they get up and measure it. Do not wrap a measuring tape around the cat or hold them in place.

3. Read the measurement label.

Compare centimeters with centimeters or inches with inches. To convert, divide centimeters by 2.54 to get inches. Product measurements labeled “outside” describe the overall footprint. Raised sides, thick padding and a sloping roof can reduce usable room. We do not estimate an internal dimension when one is not available.

4. Check the opening and the approach.

For caves and tents, consider the entry and the space needed to turn. A bed can fit the floor while still feeling too enclosed for a particular cat. If opening dimensions are not listed and are important to your decision, contact us before ordering.

5. Map it onto the room.

Lay a towel or a piece of paper on the floor matching the listed outside footprint. Check nearby doors, furniture legs and walkways. Leave an unobstructed route to the entrance and choose a spot your cat already knows.

Keep these three notes.

For a cat who changes position often, an open bed may be easier to compare. For one who likes cover, check a cave or tent carefully before deciding. No particular size or shape guarantees acceptance.
